The Ogun state government Tuesday, November 1, cleared the air on reports of the sack of the state’s chairman for the Nigerian Labour Congress Akeem Ambali.
The governor of Ogun state Ibikunle Amosun
In a press statement, signed by the head of service for the Ogun state government Sola Adeyemi, the state’s NLC chairman and the head of the teachers’ union Dare Ilekoya were sacked for activities contrary the civil service rules.
Also, 19 other civil servants were suspended from the service.
Adeyemi in his explanation gave four reasons why the civil servants were either sacked or suspended.
Below are the state’s four reasons:
1. Unholy association with politicians:
The Ogun state head of service said on several occasions, before the Teachers’ Day celebration, Ambali was caught having meetings with politicians.

Adeyemi said this act is contrary to the civil service rules.
He also said that Ambali’s sack has nothing to do with the indefinite strike embarked upon by the workers.
2. Running battle with the Ogun state government:
Adeyemi, in his statement said the state government have also had series of long running battle with the aggrieved civil servants over illegal deductions from their salaries.
3. Recommendation by disciplinary panel
Adeyemi said a panel set up to investigate allegations against the state government found the affected workers guilty of contravening the public service rules.

The panel thus recommended their dismissal from service.
“The panel recommended that with the facts available to it, Mr Akeem Ambali gave interviews, press statements and met several times with politicians for the D-day. The government therefore dismissed Mr Akeem Ambali from the public service,” Adeyemi said.
“Those recommended for dismissal include Comrade Akeem Ambali, the state chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC and Comrade Dare Ilekoya, the state chairman of the Nigeria Union of Teachers, NUT. They were all found to have contravened the Public Service Rules 04401, 04402 (c&d) and 04406 (a) due to their involvement in the political rally they held under the guise of World Teachers Day celebration event,” he said.

4. Contravening public service rules
The Ogun state government in its claim said the suspension of another 19 civil servants were approved over disobedience to civil service rules.
“Also the government approved the suspension of another nineteen public servants for contravening the public service rules. The government has already directed the appropriate agencies such as the State Local Government Service Commission to implement the approved recommendations with immediate effect,” he added.
Meanwhile, the labour leader condemning the state government’s action have vowed to continue with their ongoing strike.
