The Liverpool striker scored the first goal in England’s 3-0 win over Scotland on Friday but there was a lack of warmth in the ovation he received when he was substituted.
Sturridge came in for criticism on social media after last month’s 0-0 draw in Slovenia for not passing enough to his team-mates.
‘I’m not worried about what other people say about me,’ insisted the 27-year-old. Asked whether he believed the criticism was valid, he responded brusquely: ‘It’s not fair. It’s not fair. I feel I contribute to the team. I assist, I score. It doesn’t matter what people say about me.’
Sturridge only made 17 passes against Scotland. He touched the ball for the first time in the 23rd minute when he dropped 40 yards deep into midfield.
‘If I’m coming short to get involved in the game, then there is nobody in the centre-forward position and it is important for the team to have a focal point,’ added Sturridge.
‘I need to be between the lines, threatening the centre halves, and creating space for other people.
‘My job is to score, to create for the team. Maybe if I have dropped into midfield, I have gone too deep.
‘It is about being in the box and that is where I need to be. I want to score but as long as the team win, that’s what matters.’
