Illegal shack dwellers torch land owner’s home
A KZN woman fears for her life after her house and car were torched, allegedly by shack dwellers who live illegally on her property.
|||Durban - A Durban resident fears for her life after her house and car were torched, allegedly by shack dwellers who live illegally on her property.
The 51-year-old Puntan’s Hill woman, who has asked not to be named, fearing victimisation, said she was woken up by her barking dogs on Sunday night.
The distraught woman, who spent the night in hospital, said she could not believe what had happened.
“What can you do? People are selfish, when they don’t have their way they want to do what they want do,” she said.
The woman said thieves had stolen copper pipes at her home at 6am on Monday, just hours after petrol bombing her home.
She said she was woken by her three dogs barking at the people on the road, who were armed with stones and petrol bombs.
“They first bust my windows with stones, then they started throwing petrol bombs through the kitchen, the lounge and the bedroom. My daughter was pleading with them to stop, but that is when they petrol bombed my car,” she said.
The woman was discharged from hospital on Monday morning and is staying with her sister in the Overport area.
Police said no case had been opened at this stage.
A resident said people in the neighbourhood had written letters to the city and handed over a memorandum of understanding in November last year, but nothing had been done.
He said there were close to 100 illegal shacks on eight to 10 properties in the area.
