“Of particular interest to the senators is the detention of Kanu. They told the president in clear terms that his continued detention will only aggravate the security situation in the South east, ” a source who preferred to remain anonymous told NAIJ.com.
He continued: “Even as they made a case for him, the senators also decided to visit Kanu in prison in order to caution him against unguarded utterances and urge him to call his supporters to order.
“The distinguished senators feel they owe it as a duty to the region to ensure his release, especially because they are aware of Kanu’s rising popularity in Igbo land. ”
It is not clear whether President Buhari will heed to the demands of the senators, but the government seems desperate to get the loan.
“The government is desperate at this point and will likely meet at least their key demands,” a source in government circles squealed to NAIJ.com.
All South east senators voted against the president’s attempt to get the loan except Senator Benjamin Uwajumogu representing Imo North Senatorial District.
Uwajumogu is the only All Progressives Congress (APC) senator from the South east. He was absent from the Aso Rock parley.

Nnamdi Kanu was arrested in Lagos in October 2015 by federal government agents and has been held in prison since then despite various court orders that ruled for his release.
He has a cult following in the South east as a result of the propaganda he spilled through his pirate radio station, Radio Biafra.
Kanu is a senior member of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra, a group insisting on the sovereignty of the South east region as an independent country out of Nigeria.
