Trump and Putin spoke by phone, discussed 'constructive cooperation' and the future of US-Russian relations

Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke with US President-elect Donald Trump on Monday and agreed to work towards "constructive cooperation", the Kremlin and Donald Trump's campaign confirmed on Monday.

"President-elect Donald J. Trump today spoke with President Vladimir Putin, who called to offer his congratulations on winning a historic election," the statement from Trump read. 

Trump and Putin are said to have discussed a "range of issues," including strategic and economic matters.

"President-elect Trump noted to President Putin that he is very much looking forward to having a strong and enduring relationship with Russia and the people of Russia," said Trump's statement. 

Trump will take office on January 20, replacing Barack Obama whose relations with Putin have become tense over various issues including Syria and Ukraine in recent years.
