The leading lights of theatre were honoured at a glitzy star-studded ceremony last night for the 62nd London Evening Standard Theatre Awards.

A beaming Sir David Attenborough was welcomed onto the stage by Prince William as he accepted the Beyond Theatre Award for his contribution to broadcasting.

The Duke of Cambridge presented Sir David with his award saying he had "shaped the way we look at the world".

Sunday night’s glittering ceremony at the Old Vic saw cultural icons including Dame Shirley Bassey, Maggie Smith, Elton John, Sir Ian McKellen, Patrick Stewart and Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber turn out to celebrate theatre over the last year.

Among the actors and actresses given awards were Ralph Fiennes, John Malkovich, Tom Hiddleston, Sir Kenneth Branagh and Billie Piper.

Launched in 1955, the awards recognise talent across London’s stages from actors to designers.

The best play award went to sold-out smash hit production Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, which is currently playing at the Palace Theatre.
