Starfield's latest update lets you decorate your ship just like an outpost

Todd Howard said a lot of stuff during a recent Kinda Funny interview, including—crammed in amidst all the talk about Fallout—that a new Starfield update was being revealed this week. Today it arrived, in Steam beta as is the tradition, with an array of fixes, tweaks, and as promised, some new options for your space-buggy.

This update is not the big one, which is to say Shattered Space, the full-on Starfield expansion: Howard said that's expected to be out sometime this fall. It's still a fairly substantial update, though, with new options enabling more granular difficulty adjustment, improved surface maps that will hopefully make it easier to find your way around, improved inventory management, and a new "Ship Decoration Mode" that will let you tart up the interior of your ship the same way you do with outposts.

I'm not a Starfield player myself but that ship decorating bit feels like it's overdue. Base-building isn't my thing but I've spent more time than I care to consider carefully fiddling with the decor in my various Elder Scrolls homes, ensuring they were just so. (I'm getting an urge right now to fire up Morrowind just so I can wander around Indarys Manor.) And what is a spaceship, after all, but a base you bring with you? But proper decor demands more than just dumping your crap into a corner, especially when all that stuff ends up being shuffled off into the hold every time you change your ship design. This new mode promises to smooth out the process, and make all your deep-space Martha Stewarting a little more permanent. 

New respec options for Starfield's New Game+ mode are also being added, enabling players to change their traits and appearance when heading back into the game. Xbox Series X players will also have access to new display options, allowing them to set frame rate targets and prioritize visual quality or performance.

"The team isn't slowing down with this update," Bethesda said on Steam. "There are some major features on the horizon, including a land vehicle for speedier planetary exploration, official mod support for Starfield, and the massive Shattered Space expansion. Stay tuned in the coming months for more news on these!"

Shattered Space is still months away, but official mod support, which was confirmed as coming last year, will hopefully show up sooner: Howard said in his Kinda Funny interview that some Starfield content creators already have access to it, and the rest of us should be hearing more about it "soon."

The Starfield 1.11.33 update, as it's called, is live now in Steam beta ahead of a full rollout set for May 15. The full patch notes are below.

MAJOR CHANGES

• Improved surface maps - We’ve heard your feedback, and we’ve made some big improvements to surface maps, so you’ll always know just where to go and no longer “get lost” on the way to your parents’ place (and they weren’t buying that excuse anyway, you should really go visit them).
• New gameplay options - For those of you who like a bit of an extra challenge or want to make some aspects of the game easier, you can customize your experience with brand new options in the Settings menu. Want to make ground combat harder but ship combat easier? You can do just that!
• Added Ship Decoration mode to the interior of Ships – now you can decorate your ships just like you can with Outposts!
• Added Tabs to Container menus to make managing your inventory easier.
• Added the ability to change Traits and appearance after entering the Unity.
• Added Dialogue camera toggle in the Settings.
• Added Display settings for Xbox Series X to prioritize Visuals or Performance (Series X).

Xbox Series X Display Settings

We’ve heard from many that you’d like to have more control over the graphic fidelity and performance on Xbox, similar to how PC players can customize their experience. We’re now enabling that on Xbox Series X with a few options that you can use to find the best fit for your playstyle and display.

For each of these, we highly recommend a Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) Display running at 120hz, and to verify your Xbox is setup to use it. If you have it setup this way, Starfield will now default to a frame rate target of 40, while keeping the priority for full visuals.

• Frame Rate Target: You can now choose between 30, 40, 60 or an Uncapped frame rate on VRR displays. If you do not have a VRR display running 120hz, you will still be able to select from 30 or 60. Screen tearing may occur at times when selecting 60 on a non-VRR display.
• Prioritize: You can now prioritize between Visuals and Performance while trying to maintain the frame rate target. If you’re choosing a frame rate target of 60 or above, we recommend changing this to Performance. Prioritizing Visuals keeps the highest resolution while maintaining full detail for special effects, lighting, and crowds. Prioritizing Performance lowers internal resolution and detail for special effects, lighting, and crowds. Both modes may adjust internal resolution dynamically when scenes or action get heavier as well. When switching between modes, you will see the lighting change briefly as the system catches up to the new mode.
