In Japan, a population census will be held to identify single people and help them. This was announced at a press conference in Tokyo by the head of the Ministry of Regional Development Tetsushi Sakamoto, who was appointed concurrently as Minister of Solitude. TASS reports his words.

The civil servant said that a whole department will be created in the government office that will deal with these problems. They will develop a program of activities, prepare budget proposals and directions for the census.

It is noted that this department will deal not only with the problems of people living without a family or couple. The jurisdiction of the department will also include people with the problem of emotional loneliness, which often leads to suicide.

Earlier it was reported that the post of Minister of Loneliness appeared for the first time in the Japanese government. The problems of lonely residents, according to Cabinet Secretary General Katsunobu Kato, have worsened in the country during the pandemic. In 2020, the number of suicides in Japan increased for the first time in 11 years, reaching 20,919. According to experts, during the epidemic, the lack of employment and the increased burden of caring for children and home increases stress levels.
