Ather Issues Statement On 450X Fire Incident

Bengaluru-based Ather Electric is one of the most successful electric two-wheeler brands out in the market today. But recently, an Ather 450X electric scooter was damaged by a fire a few weeks ago in Bangalore.

The start-up was quick to react to this incident in an effort to save its public image as Ather has been one of the few companies that has had almost no such fire accidents in the past. The company conducted an investigation and has now released its findings.

The Incident

According to Ather Energy’s investigation, what exactly happened was that the fire was caused due to a short circuit. It is said that one of the connectors to the motor controller was not torqued down properly, which caused sparking around the controller terminals. 

Ather claims that the short circuit caused the safety systems to kick in, immediately cutting off further power flow and limiting the damage. But by then, the wiring harness had already caught fire resulting in the scooter getting engulfed in flames.

Rectification Measures?

Ather says that despite the fire, the Battery pack, Battery Management System and the dashboard remains unaffected thanks to its safety systems. The company stresses the fact that this was not a thermal runaway instance that we saw with the scooters of many other brands.

The Bengaluru-based start-up has further added that it was a rare human error and the brand has already incorporated and upgraded and updated the manufacturing process as equipment to rectify the same. There is also a two-step verification process to prevent such issues in the future.
