SA's 100 top selling vehicles: Nov
After months of decline, sales took a turn for the better in November. Let's crunch the numbers.
|||After months of decline, South Africa's new vehicle sales took a turn for the better in November, albeit a rather small one.
Last month saw 51 256 vehicles find new homes, up 0.4 percent on November last year. While this may well be a sign that the downward spiral is bottoming out, it must be noted that passenger car sales were actually down 0.6 percent year-on-year, while light commercials gained 1.1 percent. Yet the real good news was in the heavy commercial segment, with sales up 16.4 percent, although mediums were down 3.0 percent.
BUT DON’T GET YOUR HOPES UP
Naamsa expects the domestic vehicle market to remain under strain in 2016 due to “progressively more difficult underlying economic conditions.” The recent 0.25 percent rise in interest rates is hardly going to help things either. Furthermore, WesBank expects the current interest rate tightening cycle to continue throughout next year, fuelled by an increasingly embattled rand and its impact on inflation. The drought, US interest rate hikes and general economic headwinds are sure to have a negative impact, according to the finance institution.
EXPORTS BETTER THAN THEY LOOK
Exports could show a mixed picture in the short terms, but are expected to show strong growth in the medium to long term. South African exports were up just 0.2 percent year-on-year in November, but the numbers were hampered by the Ford Ranger's model change-over and expect the same to happen when Toyota does the same with hits Hilux early next year.
On that note, Toyota's bakkie obliterated everything on the sales charts in December selling 3938 units as dealers pushed to get out stock out of the way ahead of the all-new model arriving in February next year.
