Governor Aregbesola’s request was contained in a letter addressed to the Assembly dated November 27. The letter was on Tuesday, December 1, read at the plenary by the Speaker of the assembly, Hon. Najeem Salaam.

Recall that Omoluabi Conservation Fund Laws 2012, which was sponsored by the executive, was passed in to law by the House in order to rescue the state from any emergency when needed.

The letter reads in part: “The law stipulates that an amount not exceeding 50 per cent of the outstanding balance in the fund can be withdrawn upon the approval of the Assembly to address such emergency.

“You are quite aware that for some months now, the state government has been having serious financial challenges which have been preventing it from meeting some of her basic functions.

“This development is largely attributable to the national economic downturn aggravated by the continuous decline in revenue accruable to the state from Federation Account in the last two years.

“The insufficient fund has made it difficult for government to meet the basic needs of the people, especially the provision of infrastructure to enhance physical development of the state which is certainly an emergency that is not palatable.

“It is against this background that I seek the approval of the Honourable House of Assembly to withdraw a sum of N1.25 billion being 50 per cent of the N2.5 billion in the Osun Omoluabi Conservation Fund to assist government in the provision of infrastructure in the state.”

The speaker after reading the letter directed it to be handed over to the House Committee on Finance and Appropriation for appropriate consideration. He advised the committee to refer to the law and confirm if the request synchronises with the provision of the law.

Aregbesola who has been on a black book of the state’s civil service workers is bent on turning things around in the state as it would be recalled that the governor on Friday, November 27, at an event to mark the commencement of transmission by a new private radio station, Rave FM owned by Dr Yemi Farounbi, a PDP stalwart and Nigeria’s former ambassador to the Phillipines, started before the end of his administration.
