|||Durban – A 69-year old man was shot dead in Durban’s notorious Glebelands Hostels, bringing the death toll in the ongoing violence to 33 people killed this year.
Police spokesman Major Thulani Zwane confirmed that the man had been shot on Tuesday, but provided no further details, except to say that a case of murder had been opened at Durban’s Umlazi police station.
Since last March about 53 people have been killed at the hostels. Two weeks ago two men were critically wounded when they were shot as they served customers at a local tuck shop in the hostel.
The man killed in Monday’s attack was identified by community activist Vanessa Burger as Mlinyelwa Gobidolo. He was shot while he spoke to his sister, an informal trader at the hostel said.
