Heartbreaking news from Germany after one penguin is found dead and another two go missing.

Police are investigation an incident at a zoo in Dortmund, Germany, after one penguin was killed and another two vanished.

“The loss breaks our hearts,” zoo director Frank Brandstaetter told reporters in Dortmund, saying the 1-year-old birds had been born and raised at the zoo.

The dead humboldt penguin was found in the Flamingo cage.  Police spokesman Marco Mueller said the authorities are still trying to determine what exactly happened, whether the penguins were stolen or somehow managed to escape from their enclosure.

Dortmund city administrators have said that the body of the penguin will be examined to investigate for signs of foul play.

This isn’t the first something horrible has happened to the animals at the Dortmund zoo.

In November, a 21-year-old sea lion named Holly was found dead in her enclosure at the zoo with a smashed skull and three teeth missing, and in August, three pygmy marmosets and two acouchi rodents vanished.

Zoo keepers believe that Holly the sea lion was beaten to death however the police investigation failed to uncover any signs of foul play.

Muller said that the police are still trying to determine whether the incidents are linked.

“That’s part of our investigation,” he said.

Brandstaetter said that the zoo is increasing the number of its security staff and watch dogs to try and prevent another horrible incident.
