Bayelsa Election: What Police Plan To Do To Erring Officers
The Police Service Commission has released some numbers for the public to call if any police officer is found misbehaving during the forthcoming gubernatorial election in Bayelsa state.
The commission also drafted a retired deputy inspector general of police Yakubu Muhammad to lead a 19-man team of monitors to Bayelsa state for Saturday, December 5 elections.
The team of monitors is saddled with the responsibility of holding police officers deployed to cover security in Bayelsa accountable.
Muhammad who is a commissioner in the PSC alongside his team will leave Abuja for Bayelsa state on Thursday, December 3.
The commission’s spokesperson Ikechukwu Ani said the deployed for monitoring police officers covering elections is in line with the constitutional mandate of the commission and its contribution to the sustenance of Nigeria’s democracy.
Ani said: “It is also part of the Commission’s contribution to the sustenance of the nation’s fledgling democracy since the integrity of the electoral process cannot be fully achieved if the security personnel, more especially the Police fail to discharge their constitutional responsibilities.”

The commission also advised all police officers on electoral duty in Bayelsa state to observe the rules and regulations guiding their conduct and also work within the ambit of the rule of law.
It also warned politicians and voters to conduct themselves in orderly manner stating that they should refrain from enticing police officers on duty.
“The Officers are advised to be fair but firm and ensure that all eligible voters are allowed to discharge their civic responsibilities without molestation,” Ani said.
Ani said PSC will not hesitate to investigate or commence disciplinary actions against any erring police officer.
While ensuring that the commission will not relent in its duties, Ani also released some numbers the public can call to report any misconduct by police officers in Bayelsa state.

The numbers are: 08033010586; 08033326666; 07064782445; 08037002162 and 08091366476.
He also said the PSC will deploy monitors for the supplementary elections in Kogi state for a re-run election.
Meanwhile, the inspector general of police, Solomon Arase on Wednesday, December 2 ordered the deployment of police mobile force across Nigeria to reinforce security in all the state commands following various protests by Biafra agitators.
