Citroen India is stepping on the gas for its upcoming SUV coupe, the Basalt. Production has officially begun at the company’s Thiruvallur plant in Tamil Nadu, indicating a market launch just around the corner. This facility already churns out the C3 hatchback, its electric sibling eC3, and the C3 Aircross SUV.
The Basalt first grabbed attention with its near-production-ready appearance a few months back. This 4.3-meter-long SUV coupe will directly compete with the upcoming Tata Curvv, which boasts a similar body style. But the Basalt’s ambitions go beyond a single rival. It aims to be a stylish alternative to established mid-size SUVs like the Creta, Seltos, Grand Vitara, Hyryder, Taigun, Kushaq, and even Citroen’s own C3 Aircross.
Familiar Base, Enhanced Features
While sharing design elements with the C3 Aircross (split headlamps, LED DRLs, wraparound taillights), the Basalt sets itself apart with its distinctive, sloping roofline. The interior is expected to follow a similar theme, but rumors suggest the Basalt might benefit from a feature upgrade for enhanced comfort and convenience, addressing a common criticism aimed at the C3 siblings.
Powertrain and Feature Focus
Powering the Basalt will be a familiar 1.2-liter turbocharged petrol engine churning out 110hp, the same unit found in the C3 Aircross. Both manual and automatic transmission options will be available. However, learnings from the C3’s reception seem to be influencing Citroen’s strategy. The Basalt is expected to pack a more feature-rich punch compared to its siblings, allowing it to compete more effectively in the competitive Indian SUV market.
