Hungary to file suit against EU over refugee quota, says Orban

Bucharest, Romania (dpa) - Hungary on Thursday announced its intention to follow neighbouring Slovakia by filing a legal challenge to the European Union‘s plan to redistribute refugees from Italy and Greece to other member states.The suit will be filed "today" with the European Court of Justice, Prime Minister Viktor Orban said Thursday in the Hungarian capital Budapest, according to the official NTI news agency.Orban accused the EU of trying to "take revenge" on Hungary with a series of proceedings over the past few days because Budapest "dared to turn against Brussels‘ immigration policy."Together with Poland, the Czech Republic and Slovakia, Hungary had proved: "We can stop the migrant flood if we want to," Orban said.Hungary has been stoking the negative atmosphere against refugees for months and has almost completely stemmed the flow of migrants across its border with Serbia and Croatia by erecting a fence.On Wednesday, Orban had accused the EU of having a "secret plan" to welcome a further half a million Syrian refugees currently in Turkey and redistribute them around the bloc.Slovakian Prime Minister Robert Fico said Wednesday that Bratislava was suing the European Union over the mandatory refugee quota at Europe‘s top court.The EU decided on September 22 to distribute 120,000 refugees from Italian and Greek refugee centres across the 28 member states in line with mandatory quotas. Slovakia, Hungary, the Czech Republic and Romania voted against.
