Insurers see Chennai flood claims at around Rs 1,000 crore, a fraction of economic loss

The economic losses due to the Chennai floods are expected to run into several thousand crores but insured losses would be a fraction of that and companies estimate that it would be around Rs 1,000 crore due to low insurance penetration and the fact that government properties are not insured.
