Cops make R1.4m Mandrax bust

A 33-year-old Eastern Cape man is set to appear in court after he was found in possession of R1.4m worth of Mandrax.

Port Elizabeth - A 33-year-old man from Kwazakhele in Port Elizabeth is set to appear in the Motherwell Magistrate’s Court after he was found in possession of R1.4 million worth of Mandrax.

Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) spokesperson, Lieutenant Robert Netshiunda, said the man was arrested on Thursday morning in Motherwell and will appear in court on Monday on charges of dealing in drugs.

Netshiunda said the Hawks had been watching the suspect for some time “and when his white {Toyota} conquest was spotted at Truckers Inn in Motherwell on Thursday morning, the Hawks did not need a second invitation before pouncing on him”.

“Upon searching his vehicle, the Hawks found 28 000 mandrax tablets wrapped in two boxes which were hidden inside a black sports bag. The mandrax recovered was valued at R1.4 million.

“The suspect’s cellphone and a vehicle were also seized. The Hawks in the Eastern Cape have recovered over 70,000 mandrax tablets in the last couple of months and the quest to dismantle a syndicate which transports Mandrax to Port Elizabeth continues.”
