His brother had just been diagnosed with cancer.
Anna Cruz was on shift as a nurse at Rockyview Hospital in Calgary when she looked out the window and saw this:
"Whoever did this... Thank you!," she wrote in the caption of her Instagram photo.
“I told my patients ‘you have to look out the window, there’s something out there,'” Cruz said in an interview with Global News. “Whoever did it, he cares."
She said the message lifted the spirits of patients.
Calgary radio station 95.3 The Peak put the photo on its Facebook page, and it took off. Then DJ Ashley Hinton got a call from the man who created the sign. "He said he was at the hospital with his family and his brother just got diagnosed with cancer."
"He was a little choked up on the phone when talking about it," Hinton told BuzzFeed Canada.
The man, who asked to remain anonymous, told her he saw the patch of snow and thought it looked like a giant piece of banner paper So he walked outside and shuffled his feet in the snow to write the letters, and to draw a butterfly and flower at each end.
"He’s just a nice man who wanted to do something nice for his brother and for the other people going through a short stay at Rockyview," she said.
