In recent shootings:
- Chris Harper Mercer, 26, killed nine and wounded seven in October when he opened fire at Umpqua Community College, Oregon. He exchanged gunfire with police, then killed himself.
- Vester Flanagan, 41, killed two former colleagues from a TV news team live on air before taking his own life in August. A woman being interviewed was injured.
- Dylann Roof, 21, is accused of killing nine black church members in Charleston, South Carolina, in June. He is awaiting trial.
- UK-born Elliot Rodger, 22, killed six and injured 14 in Isla Vista, California, in May last year. He stabbed three people to death in his flat, then shot the others from his car. He later killed himself.
