Following the face-off between Biafra protesters and security operatives in Onitsha on Wednesday, December 2, Igbo youths have warned the federal government not to use force against pro-Biafra protesters as this might lead to the creation of another Boko Haram sect.
Nigerian Tribune reports that this statement was made by Mr Bright Ezeocha, the president of the Igbo Youth Congress said this in Lagos. He warned the government to try to dialogue with the agitators and not to engage them with violence as it might bring about a repeat of history.
He claimed the killing of Muhammad Yusuf, the leader of Boko Haram resulted in the violent attacks carried out by the group and that another terrorist group could be created if the government continues to kill Biafra protesters.
“I want to condemn the killing of the members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). It is uncalled for, and never expected in the 21st century that the law enforcement agencies do not know how to disperse protesters except to open bullet on unarmed protesters,” he said
He called for the release of their members and added that the protesters had a right to express their agitation but warned them not to do so by burning religious houses.
‘They must not use force. It would not do the country good. Let’s go to the roundtable and dialogue. We need to learn from history.”
Ezeocha said: “First of all, let me use this opportunity to condemn what happened on Monday when the pro-Biafra agitators blocked the overhead bridge causing much pains to the people plying that road.
“The protesters should not increase the sufferings of the people in the South-East by blocking roads.
“There is need for us to be careful, while we are fighting for people’s right. Let us not inflict pains on them. Please, don’t allow our people to go through such pains anymore.”
