Naked, robbed and riddled with bullets
Two men checked in to a Durban hotel. Later the body of one of the men was found naked and riddled with bullets.
|||Durban - Children and families splashed about in the pools of a Durban beachfront hotel on Thursday, seemingly oblivious to the fact that police were attending to the grisly discovery of a guest’s body in a 12th floor room.
Mystery surrounded the murder of the middle-aged man, believed to be a tourist, whom staff at the Durban Spa had found dead earlier in the day.
When the Daily News visited the hotel, Point police and a team from crime scene investigation were at the scene.
Security was tight and hotel staff guarded the man’s room while police carried out their investigations.
A source close to the investigation, who asked not to be named, said a male who seemed to be from out of town was found naked in the room.
He had been shot multiple times in the head.
The source said two men had booked into the hotel on Monday.
They did not provide a check-out date at the time, but on Tuesday, one of the men went to reception and advised staff he and his companion would stay another night.
On Tuesday night, a “Do Not Disturb” sign was placed on the door, but staff only noticed it the next morning.
On Thursday morning, after the pair had not checked out or told staff at the hotel they would be extending their stay, management went to their room to investigate.
It was locked, but upon opening it, they discovered the man’s body.
No mention was made as to what had become of his companion.
He was believed to have been shot on Tuesday night.
Police spokesman, Thulani Zwane, confirmed the body of a 43-year-old man had been found in the hotel and said his cellphone and wallet had been taken.
The man was from Tzaneen in Limpopo province.
He was married and worked for a non-profit organisation, a source said.
Point police were investigating a case of murder but no arrests had been made as of Thursday, he said.
Management at the Durban Spa Hotel declined to comment.
