Tim Schafer and his team are taking their much-requested Psychonauts sequel to recently-launched crowdfunding platform Fig.
The first Psychonauts was the debut release from Double Fine back in 2005, and a follow-up to the surreal psychological platformer has been a common ask from fans since.
Now, Psychonauts 2 is a reality – or, at least, it will be should Double Fine raise the total it’s looking for from backers.
Fig was launched earlier this year in a collaboration between Schafer, Double Fine COO Justin Bailey, Obsidian CEO Feargus Urquhart and InXile chief Brian Fargo.
Differing from Kickstarter and Indiegogo in its dedication to video game campaigns and the equity share it offers backers in their supported projects, the platform was previously used – unsuccessfully – by Scribblenauts creator 5th Cell in an attempt to fund its new title Anchors in the Drift.
Psychonauts 2 is seeking $3.3 million in funding – a total equal to that of Double Fine’s Kickstarter success Broken Age (formerly known as Double Fine Adventure). At the time of writing, the game has been pledged a fifth of that – $671,000.
In a teaser video for the game, Schafer reveals that the original Psychonauts has now sold almost 1.7 million copies.
Schafer will lead the project, with much of the original team rejoining him – including returning writer Erik Wolpaw, who appears alongside his current boss, Gabe Newell of Valve.
