2 000 in record-breaking science lesson

About 2 000 Indian school students conducted the “largest practical science lesson” attempting to set a new world record.

New Delhi - As many as 2 000 Indian school students on Monday conducted the “largest practical science lesson” attempting to set a new world record, organisers said.

According to the Guinness World Records, the existing record is held by 1 339 Irish pupils who achieved the feat in February this year.

Fifty students from 40 schools each, wearing laboratory coats and gloves participated in the 65-minute-long chemistry experiment at the Indian Institute of Technology in New Delhi.

“The students conducted the experiment successfully. We will be sending the result to the Guinness Book of World Records by this evening. Hopefully, the final result will come in three to four days,” A Jayakumar, one of the organisers said.

Big screens were set up as the students conducted the experiments under the watch of observers.

The event was part of a science festival organised by the government.

Smriti Irani, minister for human resources development and responsible for education, said the government was planning to hold a bigger experiment with 20 000 students in the next seven months.
