Parvathy slams Mohanlal and other AMMA members for mass resignation amid Hema Committee report allegations, 'The onus has again fallen on women'

The Hema Committee Report, set up by the Kerala government, revealed serious issues in the Malayalam film industry, including widespread sexual harassment, gender inequality, and unsafe working conditions for women. The report pointed out that many actors and technicians have been accused of sexual harassment. Following the report's release, the entire administrative committee of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA), including its president Mohanlal, resigned. This move has sparked a lot of reactions, with actor Parvathy Thiruvothu, a founding member of the Women in Cinema Collective (WCC), expressing her strong disapproval.

Parvathy slammed the AMMA committee's decision to resign collectively, calling it a cowardly act. The actress felt that the resignation was an attempt to avoid facing the media and taking responsibility. The Bangalore Days actress said that this action unfairly puts the burden on women to continue the conversation and debates about the issues highlighted in the Hema Committee Report. She mentioned that it would have been better if the committee had shown some willingness to work with the state government and other stakeholders to find solutions.

Parvathy further told Barkha Dutt about the committee's past actions, particularly how they welcomed back the prime accused in a 2017 sexual assault case while the case was still ongoing. She pointed out that the committee had previously claimed that such issues didn't exist until allegations came out. The actress was also upset with the government for putting the responsibility on women to file complaints and name the perpetrators without considering the consequences for their careers, lives, and mental health.

Earlier this week, Mohanlal's resignation as the president of AMMA came as a shock to many, especially since the entire 17-member executive committee also submitted their joint resignation. Parvathy's reaction reflects the frustration and anger felt by many in the industry who are demanding real change and accountability. Further, actors like Prithviraj Sukumaran and Tovino Thomas also shared their thoughts on the allegations levied on several Malayalam male celebrities. The duo wants strong actions to be taken against those who are proven guilty.
