JLR Classic Revives the Retro Defender with a V8 Powerhouse
Jaguar Land Rover’s Classic division has officially unveiled a bespoke customization program for the Classic Land Rover Defender V8. Spearheaded by the Bespoke Works team in Coventry, UK, and Essen, Germany, this program allows Defender enthusiasts to modernize their vehicles with upgraded technology, enhanced powertrains, and personalized finishes, all while preserving the iconic Defender’s classic charm.
Customization Options
Owners of the Classic Defender can choose from two body styles—the 90 and 110—both meticulously “remastered by hand in the UK” by Land Rover Classic engineers. These restorations, based on donor cars produced between 2012 and 2016, involve “hundreds of hours of painstaking work” to ensure top-notch quality and performance.
Exterior Enhancements
Buyers can personalize their Defender’s exterior with a selection of paint options, including Heritage, Contemporary, Premium, and “SV Metallic” finishes. The roof can be finished in a contrasting color, with exterior accents in silver or black. Three grille designs—Heritage, Standard, and Adventure—are available, along with modern LED headlights. Additional accessories include side steps, a winch, a roof rack, a ladder, and an expedition cage. For those seeking an adventure-ready vehicle, the Adventure Pack offers a roof-mounted tent, while the Ply Guys Camper Conversion transforms the Defender into a fully-equipped camper.
Mechanical Upgrades
The Defender V8 by Bespoke Works is equipped with a revamped suspension system, featuring Bilstein dampers, Eibach coil springs, and anti-roll bars. The braking system has been upgraded with four-piston Alcon brakes and larger discs. Under the hood, the Defender is powered by JLR’s 5.0-litre naturally aspirated V8 engine, delivering 400 bhp and 515 Nm of torque. Paired with an 8-speed automatic gearbox and four-wheel drive, the vehicle can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.6 seconds and achieve a top speed of 170 km/h.
Interior Features
Inside, the Defender offers eight duotone and five monotone leather upholstery options, choosing between firmer Recaro seats or more luxurious Premium seating. The center console retains a classic appearance but now features a 3.5-inch touchscreen with DAB Radio, Bluetooth connectivity, and navigation. Gloss black inlays and an updated gear selector enhance the cabin’s appeal.
Pricing and Availability
The four-seater Defender 90 starts at approximately Rs 2.11 crore, the five-seater Defender 110 at around Rs 2.20 crore, and the seven-seater Defender 110 around Rs 2.26 crore. These prices exclude taxes and optional features. The Classic Defender V8 will debut publicly at the 2024 Goodwood Revival in September.
