Audi Q5 Revamp Teased: Global Debut Set for September 2
Audi has officially announced the global debut of the third generation of its popular mid-size SUV, the Q5, set to take place on September 2. To build anticipation ahead of the launch, the brand has released a teaser that provides a glimpse of the vehicle’s new headlight design. The updated headlamps align with Audi’s latest design language, resembling the styles seen on the new-generation A5 and A6 e-tron.
Design and Teaser Details
The teaser reveals a more streamlined and elongated headlight design, emphasizing the slimmer profile and extending LED DRLs. The sharper lines and more aggressive edges of the lower bumper indicate that the new Q5 will have a sportier and more dynamic appearance compared to its predecessor.
This first look at the upcoming Q5 suggests a significant overhaul, both in terms of aesthetics and underlying architecture. The vehicle is expected to shift to the Premium Platform Combustion (PPC), which is designed to accommodate more efficient engines. This generation of the Q5 is anticipated to be Audi’s last with internal combustion engines as the company accelerates its transition toward an all-electric lineup by 2033.
Interior and Technology
Inside, the new Q5 is expected to feature Audi’s dual-screen infotainment system, similar to that found in the Q6 e-tron. Spy shots from last month revealed the inclusion of an 11.9-inch digital instrument cluster paired with a 14.5-inch touchscreen infotainment system, both running Audi’s latest operating system. This setup promises a more immersive and technologically advanced driving experience.
Powertrain Expectations
While specific powertrain details for the next-gen Q5 remain under wraps, the SUV is expected to offer a range of petrol and diesel engines internationally, all featuring 48V mild-hybrid technology. Additionally, at least one plug-in hybrid variant is likely, offering around 100 km of EV-only range. Higher variants are expected to come with Audi’s signature Quattro all-wheel-drive system as standard, while the entry-level trims might be front-wheel-drive. A manual gearbox option is unlikely to be included.
Audi’s Strategic Roadmap
Audi has been clear about its ambitious plans for the future. At its annual sales conference in March 2024, the company announced its intention to introduce at least 20 new models by 2025, with over 10 of them being fully electric vehicles. The Audi Q6 e-tron and A6 e-tron, both of which debuted earlier this year, are key components of this strategy. Additionally, the new A5, which replaced the compact A4 sedan in mid-July 2024, was the first internal combustion engine (ICE) model to adopt Audi’s new naming strategy, wherein even-numbered cars will be electric, and odd-numbered cars will retain conventional engines.
Audi Q5 in India
The current generation Audi Q5 was launched in India in 2021 and is available in two variants: Premium Plus and Technology, priced at Rs 65.51 lakh and Rs 70.80 lakh (ex-showroom), respectively. The new Q5 is expected to arrive in India following the launch of the locally assembled Q6 e-tron, which is anticipated to be priced between Rs 70 lakh and Rs 80 lakh (ex-showroom).
