Durban - The crackdown on a gang, believed to be linked to at least two recent police killings in KwaZulu-Natal, continued at the weekend, with police swooping on suspected members at KwaMashu Hostel.

One gang member was killed in a shoot-out with police and another arrested, late on Saturday.

Police spokesman, Thulani Zwane, said officers from KwaMashu police, the Flying Squad, the K9 Unit and the Inanda Cluster Task Team were acting on information that there were illegal firearms in the hostel and stormed a house, where a shoot-out occurred.

One pistol was recovered from the deceased and another from a 23-year-old man, who was subsequently arrested on charges of possessing an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

The gang is wanted in connection with the deaths of Gingindlovu-based Warrant Officer Jericho Mdletshe and the Durban Flying Squad’s Warrant Officer Ashok Ramsakkan, who were shot dead last month.

It is also believed to be responsible for a July 2014 shooting in KwaMashu during which an officer was shot in the head.
