EMS rep gunned down at garage
A health and safety representative for the Western Cape’s Emergency Medical Services has been shot and killed at a Khayelitsha garage.
|||Cape Town - A health and safety representative for the Western Cape’s Emergency Medical Services has been shot and killed at a local garage.
Wandile Mgwelo, 41, had stopped at a petrol station along Nyandeni Street, Site C, Khayelitsha to refuel his car when he was approached by an unknown gunman just after 9.30pm on Sunday.
The victim's colleagues, who asked not to be identified, say the shooter attempted to rob Wandile before shooting him in the head and chest.
Wandile, who lived in Khayelitsha, was rushed to hospital where he later died.
His job entailed working closely alongside paramedics and ambulance assistants “making their lives easier”.
A colleague says they are still reeling with shock: “He was refuelling his car and they wanted to rob him, they shot him in his chest and head.
“He was our health and safety rep. He used to sort out any health and safety issues we had.”
Police spokesperson, Colonel Andre Traut confirmed the shooting.
“This office can confirm at 9.30pm in Nyandeni Street, Site B, Khayelitsha a 41-year-old victim was shot and admitted to hospital.
“The matter is under investigation.”
