Possible IED Found At Mississippi Junior High School, 2 Detained

Bomb squads disarmed a possible explosive found in a backpack at a school in Vicksburg, Mississippi, on Wednesday afternoon.

Vicksburg police Chief Walter Armstrong said in a press conference that a student at Warren Central Junior High School had turned in another student, who'd shown him the item. The school was quickly evacuated. Armstrong said police believed the contraption was an improvised explosive device.

"We are very grateful that the child came forward with information and prevented a serious incident that possibly could have taken place at school,” he said.

There was no explosion and no injuries were reported, according to WAPT. Two students were detained, one of them 13 years old, though no charges have been reported. Police representatives didn't immediately return calls for comment.

The Clinton Police Department bomb squad used a robot to remove the device. It was rendered safe at about 3:15 p.m. It's not yet clear whether the device was indeed an explosive.

School officials said the junior high will reopen tomorrow, according to The Vicksburg Post.
