Man held for child kidnapping, murder

A 31-year-old man was arrested in Greytown for kidnapping and killing his ex-girlfriend’s 11-year-old son.

Durban - A 31-year-old man was arrested in Greytown for kidnapping and killing his ex-girlfriend’s 11-year-old son, police said on Thursday.

Police spokesman Major Thulani Zwane said that Spezihle Phewa’s mother had left him at her KwaDabeka home in Durban’s western areas on November 28 when she went to run some errands.

Upon her return she found the boy was missing and suspecting her ex-boyfriend, she reported Phewa’s disappearance to the KwaDabeka police station.

More than a week later a man collecting scrap metal at a KwaDabeka dump site came across Phewa’s decomposing body.

By this stage the Pinetown Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit had taken over the case and they tracked the ex-boyfriend down, who was hiding in the house of his new girlfriend in the Greytown area in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands.

Police said the suspect was arrested on Wednesday evening.

Zwane said the man is expected to appear soon in the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court soon on charges of murder and kidnapping.
