Carol, Mr. Robot top this year's Golden Globe nominees

Every year, a small and inscrutable group of journalists called the Hollywood Foreign Press Association announce their nominees for the year's best in film and television. This is the Golden Globes.

The film nominations were topped by Todd Haynes' Carol, which netted four nods in the top categories: Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actress for both of its stars (Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara). On the television side, USA's acclaimed freshman series Mr. Robot landed nominations in three major categories: Best Drama, Best Actor (Rami Malek), and Best Supporting Actor (Christian Slater).

There were also a few surprises. Mad Max: Fury Road was nominated for both Best Picture (Drama) and Best Director, becoming the rare blockbuster to compete alongside more conventional awards season fare. And the TV nominations were packed with first-time nominees, including Aziz Ansari (Master of None), Rachel Bloom (Crazy Ex-Girlfriend), and Lady Gaga (American Horror Story: Hotel).
