Joburg residents receive title deeds
Mayor Parks Tau handed over title deeds to 1 302 homeowners in Lehae in Johannesburg.
|||Johannesburg – “A title deed is one of the most important documents one can ever possess,” Johannesburg Mayor Parks Tau said as he handed over title deeds to hundreds of homeowners in Lehae in Johannesburg on Thursday.
Tau handed the title deeds to 1 302 homeowners of Lehae, a suburb in Lenasia,, during a ceremony at the Zakaria Park Community Hall.
During the ceremony, Tau spoke of the importance of a title deed and said it was an important document that “does not only give one proof of ownership, or an address, but one that can also be used to facilitate market and financial transactions”.
The Lehae Proper housing project, he said, “was one of the largest integrated residential development projects the City has undertaken in recent times to address the housing shortage”.
Lehae was developed after council approved plans in 2005 that would see beneficiaries from the Dlamini, Eikenhof, Old Vista, Mshenguville, Orlando East, Orlando Park, St Mary’s, Kapok and Thembelihle areas received homes.
Since the first phase of the Lehae Proper project was completed in 2006, and the second phase for Lehae Extension 1 started in 2010, a total of 1 413 houses have been built.
When the project is completed, there would be a total of 5 147 housing units. A total of 2 023 of these units would be fully subsidised and 1 099 of the units bonded. In addition, there would be 2 025 high-density housing units.
Tau said it was critical to ensure that the rightful beneficiaries occupied the right units. He noted that last month the city’s Region G “undertook a title deeds verification process in order to verify if the title deed holders are still in occupation of their houses”.
He said he was delighted at the results, which showed that the 1 307 confirmed title deeds registered on site “were ready to be issued” to the rightful owners and occupiers of the houses.
Tau added that in issuing the title deeds to the home owners, “the City was effectively and formally ceding ownership of the properties to them”.
