Cape Town - A 17-year-old boy drowned while swimming at Strand Beach in Somerset West, paramedics said on Thursday.

Russel Meiring, spokesman for ER24, said that the teenage boy drowned on Thursday as he went to the beach to swim with a group of boys.

“They had been swimming near the jetty when one of them apparently had difficulty swimming and was swept underwater,” said Meiring.

Meiring said the boy disappeared in the sea and when ER24 paramedics, rescue personnel from the NSRI, Law Enforcement and other services arrived at the scene, they found the group of boys near the jetty.

“All the services on the scene began their search for the young boy, unfortunately, no body has been found as of yet,” Meiring said.

He said local authorities were still at the scene investigating the incident.
