Durban - The NFP is hopping mad after the ANC in KwaZulu-Natal announced it was lending a hand to solve the internal problems bedevilling its coalition partner in 19 hung municipalities.

The two parties had in 2011 signed a memorandum of understanding to guide their relations at co-governing the coalition-led municipalities. But both have had their own internal problems.

Recently, the NFP was taken to court by some of its councillors over their removal from several councils.

Meanwhile, the ANC has had its fair share of problems, including members marching to the party’s provincial offices, and disputes being lodged over its provincial conference.

In a shock move, the ANC told a media briefing in Durban on Tuesday that it was scheduled to meet its coalition partner to assist with the difficulties it faced with its councillors.

“We will have a meeting tomorrow with (the) NFP and some of the councillors from these municipalities,” said provincial secretary, Super Zuma.

“We are discussing with (the) NFP in terms of trying to address some of the challenges they are having, particularly as they relate to councillors and how we manage municipalities we co-govern,” Zuma said.

But, NFP secretary-general, Nhlanhla Khubisa, shot back that it was “madness” for the ANC to go around claiming it was intervening in its internal problems. “I have never heard in politics that a political party will go and try to intervene in the internal affairs of another party,” Khubisa said.

“It’s madness if they say they want to assist us,” he said.

Khubisa also said the two parties regularly held bilateral meetings to tackle matters in line with the memorandum of understanding signed more than four years ago.

He charged that the new ANC leadership might be without an agenda since its election and this may have prompted its shock offer of assistance.

He also said the Umzinyathi District Municipality has been without a mayor for three months because of internal ANC problems and his party has assisting the ruling party to resolve the matter.
