Presidential Race, Paris Attacks Rank as Facebook’s Top Conversations of the Year

Facebook is out with its most talked about conversations for 2015 list, and not surprisingly, 2016 politics ranked atop the rest.

The U.S. presidential race came in as the number 1 topic discussed on the social giant, followed by a series of other international stories.

The Nov. 13 Paris attacks trailed at number 2; the Syrian Civil War and refugee crisis was 3; earthquakes in Nepal ranked 4 and Greece’s debt crisis rounded out the top 5.

Marriage equality, which exploded as a topic after the Supreme Court legalized gay marriage nationwide in June, ranked number 6, followed by the fight against ISIS, January’s Charlie Hebdo attack in Paris, Baltimore protests after the death of Freddie Gray and the Charleston Church massacre and confederate flag debate.

Facebook measured the conversations impact by looking at how frequently a topic was mentioned in Facebook posts made between January 1 and December 1, 2015.

“To put this list together, Facebook posts were analyzed in an aggregated, anonymized way, and then ranked to create a snapshot of the year on Facebook,” the company said.
