Anju Mahendru spoke to Screen and spoke about the reason behind their separation. She said that Rajesh Khanna was quite orthodox, which clashed with her ultra-modern thinking.

She said that he would criticise everything that she wore. She shared, "Confusion was a part of our relationship. If I wore a skirt, he'd snap, 'Why don't you wear a saree?' If I wore a saree, he'd wrinkle his nose and say, 'Why are you trying to project a Bhartiya nari look?"

She also said that her frankness was another reason behind their separation. Rajesh Khanna wanted to marry Anju but the reason behind their breakup was a cricketer as well. As per reports, the rumours about West Indies cricketer Gary Sobers and Anju's relationship left Rajesh Khanna upset.

These rumours made them get separated and after a year of their breakup, Rajesh Khanna married Dimple Kapadia. They have two daughters we well, Twinkle and Rinke Khanna.
