An inventory was compiled so the goods could be ready for stacking inside a container for shipping on Monday.
It is part of the Hindu United 108 project, an initiative of the SA Hindu Maha Sabha.
People have been encouraged to donate R108 a month towards charity work carried out by the Sabha. Funds raised would also be used to buy groceries and medical supplies in India for flood victims.
On Christmas eve, two containers left Durban with clothing to be distributed by nongovernmental organisations in Chennai.
Dinesh Naidoo, of Project 108, landed in Chennai on Monday to oversee the project.
On Sunday, 100 families each received 25kg rice, which can feed a family of four for a month, and medical supplies.
The initiative was done in partnership with Soroptimist, an international volunteer organisation, as well the Daily News’s sister paper, the Post.
Food and medical items were bought in India.
Chairman of the SA Hindu Maha Sabha, Ashwin Trikamjee, said the donations would help the destitute survive. “The response from members of the public was outstanding. People have been generous in their donations,” he said.
Heavy rainfall in November and this month caused flooding in the south of India. Areas affected included the Coromandel Coast region of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh, with the city of Chennai hard hit.
