eCabs welcomes stricter taxi regulations
Newly improved taxi regulations and more regular enforcement are in the industry’s best interests, according to eCabs managing director Matthew Bezzina.
“Having clearer regulations that bring the industry in line with the best standards in Europe is the best thing for all players. If it benefits customers, then it benefits us all, because it will help the market grow,” he said. Mr Bezzina was contacted for his reaction to amendments to existing taxi regulations enacted last week.
A Transport Malta spokesman said the amendments were drafted after consultation with the white taxi owners’ association over the last two years and were aimed at improving customer experience.
Mr Bezzina, whose company offers black taxis that can respond to customer calls, said many of the regulations had been in use at his company since its inception and he had not waited for the authorities to introduce best practices. “I feel Transport Malta is not my ultimate authority, but it is the customer who decides what is best,” he said.
Despite welcoming the regulation reform, Mr Bezzina said he hoped these would be adequately enforced as this was not always the case.
