Chelsea: Mikel Speaks On Mourinho’s Exit

With the exit of Jose Mourinho as Chelsea manager, the Super Eagles midfielder John Mikel Obi has disclosed that the team has improved and have now played three games unbeaten.

The continual poor results by the Mourinho-led Chelsea forced owner Abramovich to relieve Jose of his duties with mutual agreement.

According to Mikel, the arrival of Guus Hiddink has been very positive for the London club.

Vanguard reports that the Nigerian player said the team has improved since the former manager’s exit: “The atmosphere has improved since the change of manager. Jose is a fantastic manager, but sometimes football is a cruel game and you have to move on.”

“He came back to the club a second time and won two trophies but now he is gone. Is it the right decision? We will only see in the future.”

Hiddink temporarily managed ‘The Blues’ for the final three months of the 2008-09 campaign and Mikel, John Terry and Branislav Ivanovic are the among the few players remaining from Hiddink’s first spell at the club.

To Mikel, the Dutch manager has not changed much. “He (Hiddink) hasn’t changed much yet, but he was here before and he knows the place and all the staff,” Mikel said.

“We are down there in the table for a reason so he cannot come in and perform miracles.

“We have had three games now without losing, so (we) are making the right steps.” 

The Chelsea midfielder also believes a top-four-finish this season is still up for grabs for his team despite sitting 19 points behind Arsenal who currently occupy the first position in the league.
