George Lucas Says He Sold ‘Star Wars’ to ‘White Slavers’

George Lucas still thinks of the “Star Wars” movies as his children, even though he jokes they now belong to “white slavers” at Disney.

In a recent interview with Charlie Rose, Lucas explained how he ended up selling Lucasfilm and the rights to the “Star Wars” franchise to the Walt Disney Company in 2012.

“We were working with a writer [on another ‘Star Wars’ movie] — it wasn’t quite working out — but I was also … you know, I was also stepping away a little bit and turning things over to Kathy Kennedy,” Lucas said, explaining that he’s so attached to the series that he either has to direct it himself or step back completely.

“If I get in there, I’m just going to cause trouble because they’re not going to do what I want them to do and I don’t have the control do that anymore, and all it would do is muck everything up.'” Lucas said, comparing parting ways with the series to break up. “You have to put it behind you, and it’s a very, very hard thing to do. But you have to just cut it all off and say, ‘OK, end of all game. I’ve got to move on.'”

Although Lucas also says that Disney wasn’t “that keen to have me involved anyway.”

“They wanted to do a retro movie. I don’t like that,” Lucas said, explaining that he would’ve taken “The Force Awakens” in a different direction than J.J. Abrams did. “Every movie, I worked very hard to make them different. I made them completely different–different planets, different spaceships to make it new.”
