2015 will be coming to an end in less than 24 hours and a new year would commence. Just as some men were making headlines, the women were not left out. Some women were more popular than others this year.
They were talked about for various reasons, from their actions to their statements. Nigerians couldn’t get enough of these women as they always managed to get into the news for good or bad reasons.
Before we say goodbye to 2015, let’s have one last look at some women who Nigerians couldn’t stop talking about during the course of the year.
1. Patience Jonathan
Patience campaigned passionately for her husband
The former first lady was in the news a lot for her controversial statements. She always had something negative to say about the All Progressives Congress. Mama Peace, as she is fondly called campaigned passionately for her husband, Goodluck Jonathan. One time, during the rally of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) women, she said if you vote for APC you will go to prison.
She had said: “What did they forget in Aso Rock? If you vote the PDP and Jonathan, it would be better for you. If you vote the APC, you will go to prison. How can you jail somebody for 300 years? I’m not ready to carry food to my husband inside prison oh!”

She insulted Muhammadu Buhari, describing him as ‘brain dead. “Wetin him dey find again? Him dey drag with him pikin mate. Old man wey no get brain, him brain don die pata pata,” she said.
She was also in the news because of the rift she had with the governor of Bayelsa state, Seriake Dickson.
2. Diezani Alison-Madueke
Diezani Alison-Madueke is undergoing cancer treatment
The former petroleum minister had so much power and influence during the administration of Jonathan but things began to fall apart after President Buhari took over power. Some months back, the Emir of Kano, Muhammad Sanusi II revealed that while she was minister, more than half a billion dollars in oil revenues were disappearing every month in unknown direction.
She left Nigeria for the United Kingdom to seek treatment for breast cancer. She was arrested in London in October on suspicion of bribery and money laundering. She was later released on bail. Not too long ago, reports surfaced that she was dead but it was quickly debunked by her family. Report however, has it that her health condition has worsened.
3. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala
Okonjo-Iweala has denied having a hand in the arms deal scam
The former minister of finance and coordinating minister for the economy was alleged to have diverted the late head of state Sani Abacha’s loot. She allegedly approved the transfer of at least N61.4 billion ($300 million and £5.5 million) from funds recovered from the late Abacha, to the office of the NSA, few weeks to the 2015 presidential election. She was also allegedly involved in another “suspicious” transfer discovered by the House of Representatives.
Okonjo-Iweala has said she had no hand in the arms purchase deals facilitated by Dasuki.
4. Aisha Alhassan
Aisha Alhassan
Also known as Mama Taraba, she was the gubernatorial aspirant of the APC in Taraba state. She was declared winner of the election, thus making her the Nigeria’s first female governor-elect. This was after a Taraba state governorship election petition tribunal sitting in Abuja nullified the election of Governor Darius Ishaku of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The case is still in court as Ishaku appealed the verdict of the tribunal.
She is currently serving as the minister of women affairs after being nominated and sworn in by President Muhammadu Buhari in November.

5. Linda Ikeji
Popular blogger acquired a property worth millions of naira
The popular blogger has always had critics like every other successful person. This year, she got tongues wagging especially after she acquired a property worth millions of naira in the high-brow Banana Island in Ikoyi, Lagos. Some accused her of sleeping with men to get money but in a swift reaction she said she has never in her life slept with a man for money, and it was only blogging that brought her that far.
Towards the end of the year, she was accused of partaking from the arms deal loot. There were reports that a popular female blogger got money from a top politician and some were of the opinion that she was the one. She later came out to clear her name from the allegations.
