Story & Photos By David Algranati
Promoter Clevester Blackstone officially launched a new boxing series Saturday night as “Make the Capital Great Again” debuted at the Patriots Theater at the War Memorial. The seven-bout card featured local talent, unbeaten matchups, and emphatic stoppages, capped by a dominant hometown main event performance.
Main Event: Shinard Bunch Stops Magalong in One
Trenton’s own Shinard “Showtime” Bunch made a powerful homecoming statement in the main event, overwhelming John Paul “Pitbull” Magalong in a scheduled ten-round bout.
From the opening bell, Bunch applied relentless pressure. Less than a minute in, he trapped Magalong in a neutral corner and dropped him with a series of right hands. After the action resumed, Bunch stayed on the offensive, ultimately landing the final punch of the night as he countered a missed Magalong right hand with one of his own.
Magalong tumbled under the bottom rope, and referee Harvey Dock halted the contest on the advice of Magalong’s corner.
Official time: 1:16 of the first round.
Bunch improves to 22-3-1 (18). Magalong falls to 14-3 (8).
Co-Main Event: Valencia and James Battle to Unanimous Draw
In the co-main event, undefeated middleweights Jean Pierre “El Verdugo de Esmeraldas” Valencia and Kenny James delivered a competitive four-round contest that ended with neither man tasting defeat.
James boxed sharply in the opening round and scored a knockdown in the second with a left hand–right hook combination. Valencia beat the count and gradually worked his way back into the fight. In the third, a straight right from Valencia briefly staggered James, shifting the momentum.
Valencia pressed the action in the fourth and was awarded a knockdown when a right hand sent James into the ropes. James recovered and fought through the final bell.
All three judges scored the bout 37-37, resulting in a unanimous draw.
Valencia moves to 4-0-1 (2). James advances to 5-0-1 (2).
Cserenyi Wins Majority Decision Over Bean
After a 16-month layoff, Danny Bean returned to the ring against unbeaten Mike Cserenyi in a four-round heavyweight bout.
Bean landed the sharper shots early, snapping Cserenyi’s head back with right hands in the opening round. The fight tightened in the second before Cserenyi took control in the third with higher output and sustained pressure.
Both fighters showed fatigue in the fourth, with Cserenyi landing a telling left hand late in the round. The judges returned scores of 39-37, 39-37 Cserenyi, and 38-38, giving Cserenyi a majority decision victory.
Cserenyi remains unbeaten at 2-0. Bean’s record stands at 4-3 (2).
Mitchell Outpoints McMillian in Battle of Undefeated Heavyweights
Undefeated heavyweights Cornelius Mitchell and Marquel McMillian squared off in a measured four-round affair.
Mitchell controlled the tempo throughout, staying defensively responsible while outworking McMillian with consistent activity. His body work, including a solid right hand in the second round, helped separate him on the scorecards.
The judges scored the bout 40-36, 40-36, and 39-37, all in favor of Mitchell.
Mitchell moves to 2-0-1. McMillian drops to 1-1.
Farrell-Francis Extends Knockout Streak With First-Round TKO
Entering the night on a three-fight knockout streak, De’Jon Farrell-Francis wasted little time against Tunde Fatiregun in their cruiserweight bout.
After absorbing a pair of early shots, Farrell-Francis landed his first clean power punch and sent Fatiregun to the canvas. Fatiregun rose and continued, but Farrell-Francis scored three additional knockdowns, the final one coming via a sharp right uppercut.
Referee Earl Brown stopped the contest at 2:18 of the first round.
Farrell-Francis improves to 5-3 (4). Fatiregun falls to 3-3.
Calvery Harris Scores Knockout in Pro Debut
York, Pennsylvania’s Calvery “40Cal” Harris made an impressive professional debut, stopping Ryan Mondala in a four-round lightweight bout.
Harris’ speed advantage was evident from the opening round, and he began sitting down on his punches in the third, repeatedly stunning Mondala. Early in the fourth, a single right hook dropped Mondala to the canvas.
Referee David Franciosi waved it off at 0:23 of the fourth round.
Harris starts his career at 1-0 (1). Mondala’s record drops to 0-4.
Davila Opens Card With Unanimous Decision Win
The evening opened with undefeated Juan “Thrilla” Davila taking on veteran Stephen Barbee in a four-round super lightweight contest.
The bout was competitive early, but Davila’s superior accuracy gave him the edge in the middle rounds. The fourth was the most action-packed, as Davila connected with power shots despite suffering a bloody nose.
All three judges scored the fight 40-36, 39-37, and 39-37 for Davila.
Davila remains unbeaten at 5-0 (2). Barbee’s record is now 1-6.
