LA VERNE—The Damien and Etiwanda boys basketball teams are used to playing high-stakes games against each other but usually it’s for control of the Baseline League. This time though, the stakes were even higher with a CIF State playoff berth on the line. Damien used a 15-0 run in the third quarter to pull away from league rival Etiwanda for a 59-46 win on Friday night in the CIF Southern Section Open Division play-in game. Damien (27-7) secured a spot in the CIF State playoffs. They will find out on March 1, when the state brackets are released, if they are in the Open Division or Division 1.
