Irish Eyes Are Smiling As Cacace Wins WBA Title From “Jazza” Dickens

Not only was James “Jazza” Dickens looking to defend his WBA junior lightweight title against former IBF champ, Belfast’s Anthony Cacace, he would spoil The St. Patrick’s weekend celebration right there in Dublin where this fight took place.

The first four rounds were back and forth as each mend seemed to alternate winning each frame. Cacace appeared to be pulling his punches, not committing. In the fifth however, Cacace seemed to come alive, landing a good left that knocked Dickens off balance. A follow-up flurry seemed to give Cacace the round decisively.

Cacace opted to switch hit against the Southpaw Dickens with mixed results. He seemed to be in charge over the next several rounds, his reach and height finally coming into play. Dickens appeared to take the ninth after an accidental clash of heads left Cacace annoyed and Dickens motivated as he landed some nice shots. Cacace’s effort and accuracy was nowhere to be found in the tenth as Dickens was looking for a late round surge.

Cacace seemed to shade the eleventh and Dickens attacked with desperation in the final round, But Cacace thwarted every advance. The judges saw this technically intense fight as follows: 115-113, 116-112 and 116-113 for the new champion, Anthony Cacace. He moves to 25-1, 9 KOs while Dickens falls to 36-6, 15 KOs.
