Pashinyan slams Aliyev for making claims that pose threat to security in South Caucasus
YEREVAN, November 10. /ARKA/. Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan slammed today Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev for making claims, which pose a threat to security and stability in the South Caucasus.
Speaking at a government meeting, Pashinyan said the statements Aliyev made on November 8 once again prove that Azerbaijan's geopolitical claims pose a threat to security and stability in the South Caucasus and, in a broader sense, to the entire region.
According to him, Aliyev’s ‘arrogant’ statements were not addressed to the international community but to Armenia in a bid to accuse Yerevan of failing to comply with previously reached agreements.
"Pashinyan added: "Moreover, Aliyev's statements were made the day after a meeting between the Armenian and Azerbaijani foreign ministers to discuss a possible peace agreement in Washington, mediated by U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, when the ministers had not yet returned to their countries.’
According to him, by their statements the Azerbaijani leadership brutally violated the written agreement on the non-use of force and threat of force, reached in Sochi only a few days ago (during a meeting with Russia’s Putin).
According to the Armenian premier, the Azerbaijani leader’s claims regarding the territory of Armenia, distort the Armenian toponyms and obviously threaten the peaceful population.
Addressing army officers in the town of Shushi on November 8, when Azerbaijan marked the second anniversary of victory in the 2020 war, Aliyev argued that Armenia must provide Azerbaijan with land corridor to its exclave Nakhichevan.
In August, Nikol Pashinyan said Armenia would set up three checkpoints at its border with Azerbaijan for Azerbaijani automobile traffic to and from Nakhichevan through Armenia, stressing that the routes would operate under Armenian legislation, but the proposal was rejected by Azerbaijan because of ‘unsuitable terrain and climate conditions.’-0--
