YEREVAN, December 1. /ARKA/. Yerevan’s Deputy Mayor Suren Grigoryan argued today that Municipality’s intention to triple the prices for paid parking on those parts of the city's streets, which are nbsp;marked by red lines is not to seek additional revenues, but to regulate the traffic in the downtown.br

Speaking at a municipality discussion today on the plan, Grigoryan said the city faces a string of transport-caused problems such as insufficient number of subway stations and parking spaces in addition to the growing number of privately-owned cars.

p
Particularly, the municipality is seeking to raise the annual price of paid parking on red line sections from current 12,000 drams to 160,00 drams. Grigoryan avoided to provide clear-cut calculations for the proposed rise.

p
Eventually, Grigoryan said the plan is based on the experience of neighboring countries, particularly Georgia. However, the cost of an annual parking in Georgia’s capital Tbilisi is 800 GEL, an equivalent of 120,00 drams at the current exchange rate, not 160,000 drams.

Municipality spokesman Hayk Kostanyan said earlier the city is divided into two A and B zones. The zone A covers the areas around Surb Grigor Lusavorich Cathedral, Aghatangegos, Khanjyan, Alek Manukyan, Charents, Koryun, Abovyan, Isaakyan, Moskovyan, Saryan and Leo streets- in total about 40 streets and avenues. The following rates are planned to be applied there:

Zone B covers the Kentron administrative district (except for zone A) and Arabkir district.

1 000 drams - for 1 day

Now paid parking on so-called red lines costs 100 drams for 1 hour, 500 drams for a day, 1,000 drams for a week, 5,000 drams for a month and 12,000 drams for a year. ($1 is AMD 402.99). --0--
