Golf is a great way to spend quality time with friends and family, but if you have a beginner golfer with you, they might seem a little frustrated if they’re having a hard time keeping up. Thankfully, there are a handful of things beginners can do to improve, from picking the right equipment to getting consistent practice. Basking Ridge Country Club is no stranger to beginners, which is why we offer instructional courses to help them hone their skills and sharpen their mechanics through our Golf Academy. Here are a few golf tips for beginners that will help tremendously.
Start with a Few Beginner Clubs
It can be easy to get drawn in by the allure of high-grade, professional golf clubs, but truth be told, the best place to start as a beginner is with beginner clubs. Although this might seem counterintuitive, beginner clubs are designed to be more forgiving, especially when you’re working on your form and swing. Higher-quality golf clubs are designed for precise, powerful swings and are less forgiving than beginner clubs.
Also, focus less on finding the perfect set of beginner clubs and look for a few solid clubs instead. Find a drive, an iron or two, and a putter that all feel comfortable, and start from there. As your form and swing improve, you’ll be able to more effectively use other clubs.
Sign Up for Some Lessons
While this might not be at the top of your list, signing up for a few golf lessons, like the ones offered at Basking Ridge Country Club. Working with experienced golfers and golfing instructors is the best way to hone your stance, swing, and mechanics. Golf is all about mechanics, so it makes sense to learn from someone who has been at it longer than you have. We’ve been fortunate enough to have PGA professionals teach a few of our classes, and it’s hard to beat that level of experience. After a few rounds of lessons, you’ll be able to pinpoint weak spots in your mechanics and put everything you’re learning into practice the next time you hit the green.
Practice Makes Perfect
No matter how much training you receive and knowledge you gain, it’s not of use if you don’t take the time to put everything into practice. Take a weekend and set up a tee time, and as you’re playing, remember what you’ve learned and act on it. Work out those little mechanical kinks, and be patient with yourself, as becoming a more advanced golfer doesn’t happen overnight.
You might also consider spending some time at the driving range. A strong drive works wonders for your game and sets you up for fewer strokes at every hole. While you’re driving, remember those corrections and apply them here as well – your drive is as much about control as it is power.
