EU rejects election in Belarus and threatens new sanctions

BRUSSELS, Belgium: The European Union condemned the elections held on January 26 in Belarus as illegitimate and signaled plans for additional sanctions, citing widespread repression and lack of democratic standards under President Alexander Lukashenko's regime.

The orchestrated vote was widely expected to extend Lukashenko's grip on power, now entering its fourth decade.
