Youswim review: We tried the viral crinkle swimsuits on 3 different body types

The magic of "The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants" wasn't all about the friends we made along the way — it was also about a miraculous pair of jeans that fit four bodies of different shapes and sizes. The Insider Reviews team is likewise made up of people with unique figures and feelings about trying on swimsuits. Three of us ordered Youswim's crinkle bathing suits in the same size, and magically, each fit us to a T.

Instead of the traditional dozen sizes, Youswim has just two: Stretch I (2-14) and Stretch II (14-24). This simplifies finding your fit, plus they make an easy gift if you don't know your friend's exact measurements. In our collective Youswim review, we detail what we liked best about their different designs. After all, the sizing may be universal, but we still have our own preferences for coverage and support.

The suit will look tiny when you open the package, but they're meant to stretch.

"When you first open up your YouSwim package, you will likely be shocked. It truly looks like a bathing suit fit for a child. But that's the ultra stretchy fabric working its magic," says Maiya Pascouche, beauty editor. 

Youswim's suits are lightweight, unlined and seamless. The fabric is made from a flexible Oeko-Tex certified nylon yarn and elastane blend that has a plush, puckered texture. It's fabric is notably stretchy — so much so that when I pull the bottoms halfway across my wingspan, it still snaps back to its original shape. It's safe to run through the washing machine on a gentle cycle, but it's best to it let air dry after.

The Aplomb

"The Aplomb cut in particular is my favorite style of top because it's a sexy scoop that still has a good amount of coverage. I love the vintage look of the High Waist bottom as well," says Pascouche. "No matter how my body shape fluctuates, this suit fits like a glove. I never feel it digging into my skin while wearing it nor do I notice it falling or drooping throughout the day. It stays molded to your body comfortably all day long without feeling compressive."

The Poise

I'm a 34B cup and I wear a Small top and Medium bottom. The Poise top fit me like an unlined sports bra, while the super-soft high-waist bottoms sit around my belly-button. It has high-cut legs, with full coverage in the rear.

Maiya and I both tried the Aplomb and Poise, and found that we both liked the Aplomb better. "After loving the Aplomb High Waist Suit for so long, I was excited to give a new top design and waist cut a try," she says. "While I love the look of the thin straps and square neck of the Poise top, it doesn't fit as well as the Aplomb on me. It reminds me a bit of tube top rather than a bralette and I much prefer the scoop style of the Aplomb or the slight V-neck of the Eva."

The Eva One Piece

"Okay, Youswim. First of all, I love you. This is perhaps the most comfortable bathing suit I have ever worn! Of the many options I have in my overstuffed drawer (from years of testing bathing suits for our buying guides), the Eva is unequivocally my most reached-for. I can't wait to buy more styles!  

I am typically a size 12 with a DDD cup, and I opted for the Stretch 1 size. Because it has a low-cut scoop-back, I wouldn't call this one-piece supportive on the chest by any means — but I also kind of don't care because it's so unbelievably comfortable. If you're looking for best swimsuits for large busts, you'll definitely want to opt for one of the styles with a higher back, like the Poise. 

The thing I love so much about the crinkle style is that the material is silky and weighty, but it's not compressive at all (unlike the TA3 shaping swimsuit, which I also love but for very different reasons). Even once it's wet, the way the material clings to the body doesn't make me feel too exposed, plus it has a normal-cut leg for a solid amount of coverage. And I know that because it's super stretchy, it's going to fit me through the very real weight and size fluctuations I experience at the whims of my cycle." — Sally Kaplan, executive editor, Insider Reviews

Youswim advises that tall people with long torsos can wear its one-pieces without issue. If you fall in this category, the Poise One-Piece has the most coverage and adaptable fit thanks to its adjustable straps. 

The Eva Two-Piece

"I really love the cut of this top. It's a minimal V-neck style that offers similar coverage to my beloved Aplomb and would probably look great on those with slightly wider set chests. The cheeky bottom on the other hand is cute, but it's a little too small for me. I prefer a bit more coverage on my hips and tummy, but wanted to give this style a try to see if the cheeky cut was more about the butt than the overall shape. I'd say if you're used to tie-side bikinis or lower rise bikinis, this is the perfect cut for you. If you're hoping for a higher cut bikini with a cheeky back, then I'd go for the Standard Waist instead." — Maiya Pascouche, beauty editor, Insider Reviews

Cons to consider

The suits are well-made with a thick fabric, but it's not equipped for prolonged heat exposure in the dryer. High heat can make it lose its elasticity in patches. Maiya also noted that the material takes a long time to dry. "Be prepared to be a bit wet if you continue wearing it throughout the day," she says. 

The bottom line

If you're going to invest in the crinkle bathing suit trend, Youswim is the best place to start. Their swimsuits officially rank among most comfortable we've ever worn, and the sizing scheme turned out to be legitimate. The one caveat is that they're slow drying and can get ruined in the dryer machine. Still, with the right care, it's likely to be a swimsuit you'll wear season after season.
